Dreambox

 Dreambox

I found this tool in the RQN Technologies Software Table in Dr. Wang’s powerpoint. Dreambox is an online learning software that is focused on teaching math to elementary and secondary students (Dreambox, 2022). Dreambox adapts to each child that is in the classroom and drives each child’s learning by giving them concepts to work on that are appropriate for the level that they are at (Dreambox, 2022). Student progress is also tracked so teachers are aware as to how each of the students are doing. This will help teachers guide the instruction in the classroom because they will be aware of the concepts that the students need extra help on.

Ease of Use

Dreambox is a very easy tool to use. After talking to the teacher that I am volunteering for at Lincoln Heights, she stated that it is a very easy tool to use. This is because it is user friendly and simple to navigate. She said that she was able to learn how to see students progress fairly quickly. She also knows how to navigate Dreambox on the students' side. Whenever any of the students are having a hard time navigating Dreambox, she knows exactly how to help them. For instance, one of the students had a hard time logging onto Dreambox. She was able to log the student on very quickly and efficiently so it did not take too much time. Overall, Dreambox is a very easy tool to use.

Versatility

I think that Dreambox is somewhat versatile. I say this because Dreambox is just a math program. Dreambox serves as an assistant teacher in the aspect that it is finding out what students already know and finding concepts that they are ready to learn (Dreambox, 2021). The point of Dreambox is to assist the teacher in the classroom in helping them find out where each of the students are at skillswise in math and finding the concepts that they still need to learn. It is helping the teacher seek out each student's individual needs. The program is not very versatile because it can really only be used for these three purposes. It cannot be used for language arts, science, or social studies in the classroom. It is really just used as a tool to help teachers instruct math. Therefore, Dreambox is only somewhat versatile.

Likelihood of Using

I would say that I am very likely to use Dreambox in the future. This is because I have seen it used in multiple classrooms and it really helps teachers understand where each of the students are in regards to math.

Connections to Course

This connects to the “7 Events of Instruction” by eliciting the desired behavior (checking for understanding). This is because the point of Dreambox is to see where students are at skillswise in math. Teachers will be able to see what content students are understanding and what content they are not. This will drive their instruction. A teacher can check for understanding of the topics that they are currently instructing on in class through Dreambox. If all of the students mastered a certain topic before the teacher has even taught it, the teacher may decide to spend not as much time on that topic. Dreambox is another way for teachers to check understanding of topics previously learned and those that are currently being learned. For these reasons, Dreambox connects to checking for understanding.

Dreambox connects to the "TLC Framework" of "T3 Instructing." This is because Dreambox shows the kids how to do the math problems they do not know how to do yet. Dreambox will first give kids a tutorial on how to do a math problem and then will let them practice it on their own. If the students continue to get a problem wrong, Dreambox will have them go through the tutorial again. Dreambox serves as a second teacher in the classroom because it instructs the students on how to do each of the problems.

  1. Hi Haley,
Great post! We use Dreambox in my placement classroom, and it is a really great program! The kids seem to really like it and we have seen a lot of growth with our students. The school had started using it when COVID hit, and then with the success, decided to keep using it. I would agree that this is a great way to see which concepts you may need to spend more time on in the classroom.
